Waste Disposal

The purpose of this article is to communicate the guidelines for using the waste transfer site. The property is owned by the Government of the Virgin Islands and is subject to the rules and oversight of the VI Waste Management Authority.

If you have any questions about these guidelines or something that is not covered, please reach out to hello@wica.vi and we will do our best to find an answer.

Tires: There is NO dumping of tires allowed at the dump site. If you have tires for disposal you will need to take them to a garage on St Thomas or you can bring them to Rachael’s repair shop and pay a fee of $20 per tire for them to be dismounted disposed of on St Thomas.

The tire companies on St Thomas charge anywhere from $7-$12 per tire that is NOT on a rim, for disposal. $15-$20 for a tire and rim combo. The best place to take tires is right there in Subbase with the orange gates.

Furniture: Break it down into the smallest pieces possible before putting in the trash containers.

Cardboard Boxes: Break them down flat so they take up the smallest possible space.

Car & Boat Batteries: To recycle these, contact Katie Eyre or Rachael Ackley.

Paints/Varnishes:

  • GOOD paint that could be re-used by someone else can be saved in our paint depot at the dump.
  • Unusable old paints, varnishes etc. should be kept under a cover from rain with the lid cracked until it is completely hardened then it can be thrown in dumpster.
  • Two -part paints or foams etc. should be mixed together and allowed to harden and then put in a dumpster.
  • Paint hardener (Japan drier) can also be purchased at ace hardware or a paint store to speed up the process of drying the paints.
  • Do NOT leave old rusted cans of chemicals or cans and pots with no lids sitting on the ground. These chemicals leach into the soil! And then run off into the sea! Damaging wildlife habitats.

Construction Debris: SMALL amounts of construction debris may be put into the dumpsters. Major construction (ie: replacing a roof, decks, all of your windows, etc.) requires that you source your own waste removal. Any owner that obtains a building permit should have their own dumpster dedicated to the entire length of the build. Owners are responsible for their worker’s actions in the dump, please give them direction. Below are some companies to contact for waste construction dumpsters:

  • A9 Trucking – (340) 998-9538 – a9molo@hotmail.com
  • YES trash bin removal – (340) 690-8394
  • Bovoni Landfill – (340) 775-3665

Appliances: VI Waste Management Authority does not take responsibility for appliances and other metal goods disposal, WICA pays for this cleanup as a public service and to keep the island looking good. If you dispose of an appliance, be sure to place it neatly in the metals pile and it would be appreciated if you make a donation to WICA to defray the costs for removal.

Oil: Engine oil ONLY can be placed in the oil bins. Vegetable oil, in small amounts (less than a gallon) can be poured into the dirt or into a bucket of sand and allowed to dry up.

Vehicles: Contact the chair of the Abandoned Vehicles Committee, currently Mark Sims.

Clean Aluminum can be recycled at Julio’s scrap metal in subbase or Mendez in Bovoni – ie aluminum shutters, window frames etc.

Bad gasoline: Small amounts can be poured carefully onto a piece of dry unpainted plywood and allowed to evaporate.

The “Green Dump”

On the way to the deep water dock on the left hand side is the Green Dump. Please ensure you unload your garden debris as far back as possible so we can maximize the money we spend on pushing back the waste. Do not dump any trash other than vegetation in this area.
