It’s hard to imagine that these before and after pictures are from the same location. For decades, people have disposed of tires in a massive pile, rims and all, because they are regulated waste and cannot be put into the household waste dumpsters.
It’s taken years of planning and conversations but WICA finally approved funding for a meaningful project to clean up the tires pile and the huge accumulation of concrete waste that’s been a safety hazard and an eyesore at the transfer station. We are also working towards an improvement to the oil bins situation and the paint cans area.
With the assistance of Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA), over the course of 6 weeks, 5 full roll-off dumpsters were delivered and hand-loaded with tires. Many of the older tires needed to be cut from the brush after decades of growth. The final step was to hire equipment to pull out the last of the tires and grade the area. Below are the results.
Here is an article on the guidelines for usage of the Waste Transfer site and “Green Dump”. Let’s all do our best to keep this area looking great for years to come!
